Twitchers, time is running out to catch Britain’s birds before the season changes and luckily, Bedfordshire is full of great sites for seeking out different breeds of bird.

There are a whole host of birds that can be found in and around the rural areas of Bedfordshire, including owls, finches, waxwings and more rarer species. Don’t take our word for it though, you’re here to find out the best places for finding birds in the county.

The more common types of British bird can be found pretty much everywhere, but if you’re looking for something a little rarer or more exciting, you might want to grab your binoculars and take a note of the following places.

For smaller birds, like finches and black redstarts, make sure to head to Ampthill Park, Cardington, Leighton Buzzard and Flitwick. Little Egrets, waders and little turns are often seen at Grovebury near Leighton Buzzard, as well as at Marston Vale.

If you’re someone wanting to catch sight of the bigger British raptors, buzzards, various hawks and birds such as harriers can be seen at Old Warden, the Swiss Garden and towards Putnoe Woods.

More unusual breeds, like Green Woodpeckers can be found at Shefford, but you’ll need to be quiet and full of patience.

For a more exciting bird experience, Woburn Park is the home of a collection of black swans which you can watch leisurely swim up and down the lake.
