PART OF BRAHMS AT THE RED HEDGEHOG
If you had turned up at the popular C19 Viennese tavern, 'Zum Roten Igel' ('The Red Hedgehog') - you might well have bumped in to Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn or Brahms, enjoying jokes, goulash, gypsy songs and general banter. This weekend's events explore the kinds of Hungarian music that Brahms might well have heard there. Come and explore how these influences found their way into his greatest works, not least his sublime Clarinet Quintet.
Event 5: Cafe Danube Cellar Sessions (concert)
The Quarry Theatre, 26 St Peter's Street, Bedford MK40 2NN
ZRI re-creates the atmosphere of the Red Hedgehog tavern - prepare to laugh, yell and maybe shed a tear with music from Bach and Johann Strauss to Donna Summer and Taylor Swift.
This concert is inspired by the cellar at the Red Hedgehog Tavern in C19 Vienna where musicians from all scenes would meet after hours. At the cellar, boundaries between genres become blurry as people are immersed in each other's sound worlds. Here, as wine glasses set their own rhythms, the night invites distortions of time, and composers from the past meet composers from the future. "A clever and inventive combination of classical, folk, cabaret and popular influences with a Viennese flavour" (Classical Notes). "…skill, polish, and accuracy… Harlan spearheads his all-star group with an infectious extroverted personality… accuracy with the energy and excitement of a bucolic dance band" (American Record Guide)
